Synopsis

House of Flame and Shadow is the third book in Sarah J. Maas's Crescent City series. After discovering that realms beyond her home world of Midgard exist, Bryce Quinlan finds herself stranded in one of these unfamiliar worlds, cut off from the family, friends, and partner she left behind, and unsure who around her can be trusted as she searches for a way home. At the same time, Hunt Athalar has been recaptured by the ruling Asteri and imprisoned in their dungeons, stripped of his freedom and left desperate to help Bryce despite being powerless to reach her. With the two of them separated across different worlds and each facing their own dangers, Bryce ultimately seeks out an alliance with the Night Court, hoping that combining her resourcefulness with new allies from beyond Midgard can offer some way to defend her world against the Asteri's growing threat.

Where it sits

Awards (verified)

  • Readers' Choice Award (Best Romantasy), 2024: won; 2024 was the first year of the new 'Romantasy' category (split out of Best Fantasy); House of Flame and Shadow won that category, not Best Fantasy (which went to Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune) -- confirmed via independent reporting of the award body's own results.

Notes

  • From the series record (Crescent City): A 4th volume has been confirmed by the author as planned, with no title or release date announced as of 2026-08-07 -- isn't counted here yet.
