Sarah Janet Maas was born on March 5, 1986, in New York City, and grew up on Manhattan's Upper West Side. She graduated magna cum laude from Hamilton College in 2008 with a degree in creative writing and a minor in religious studies. Maas began writing what became her debut novel, Throne of Glass, at age sixteen, posting early chapters on the fiction-sharing site FictionPress.com, where the story attracted a large following. After querying literary agents, she signed with agent Tamar Rydzinski in 2009, and Bloomsbury Publishing acquired Throne of Glass in 2010; it was published in 2012 as the first of seven books. She has since written two further fantasy series set in overlapping worlds, A Court of Thorns and Roses, begun in 2015, and the three-book Crescent City series, published between 2020 and 2024. Her novels have been translated into more than 40 languages, with combined sales exceeding 75 million copies worldwide.
