Synopsis
The Lord of the Hells has weakened the barriers between an ancient wilderness and the mortal world, and the wilderness is spreading into human lands. In the kingdom of Breodanir, which is in turmoil, Hunter Lords are needed as symbols of stability, since even the merchant roads can become dangerous. Stephen of Maubreche and his huntbrother Nenyane are called in disgrace to the King's City, along with other hunters who rejected their oaths, to be retrained. Their trials set them against forces of the wilderness, against demons and against each other, and a failure would open the West to the Lord of the Hells.
