Synopsis
King Arthur fathers a child with his half-sister Morgause, and the babies born on the same May day are set adrift to drown. Only Mordred survives. A fisherman and his wife adopt him, and when he is about six the sorceress Nyneve takes him to his birth mother. Raised in isolation, Mordred learns that he is both Arthur's son and his nephew, and that Arthur once tried to have him killed. He would rather not become the brave, skilled warrior a prince is expected to be, and he resists the role. The story presents him as a tragic figure struggling against a fate laid down before his birth.
