Synopsis
Jade City opens a generation after the war that freed the island nation of Kekon from foreign occupation, in the city of Janloon, where rival criminal clans still openly wield jade, a rare mineral mined only on Kekon that grants those genetically suited to it enhanced strength, speed and other abilities. The novel follows the Kaul siblings of the No Peak clan: Lan, the Pillar who leads the clan; Hilo, its Horn, in charge of military and street affairs; and Shae, who has deliberately kept her distance from clan business after years abroad, along with their adopted cousin Anden, still training as a jade-wearing Green Bone. As the internationalist No Peak clan and the isolationist Mountain clan compete for control of the jade trade and the loyalty of Janloon's neighborhoods, mounting incidents of violence push the uneasy peace between the two clans toward open war.
