Overview
Fonda Lee's Green Bone Saga follows the rival Mountain and No Peak clans of Kekon, a fictional island nation modeled on mid-to-late 20th-century Hong Kong and Taiwan, a generation after a devastating "Many Nations War" analogous to World War II. Kekon is the world's only source of bioenergetic jade, a mineral that grants enhanced strength, speed and senses to those genetically able to wear it and trained in its discipline, making its trade and control the center of clan warfare, politics and family loyalty across the trilogy's decades-long span. The series has been described as blending crime-family drama in the vein of The Godfather with wuxia-inflected martial arts action, deliberately set outside the genre's usual medieval-European mold. Its opening volume, Jade City (2017), won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel and the Aurora Award for Best Novel and was a finalist for the Nebula Award for Best Novel; the trilogy continued with Jade War (2019) and concluded with Jade Legacy (2021), which both Lee and NPR have described as a story explicitly "about endings," establishing Lee as a major voice in secondary-world epic fantasy.
