Synopsis
Opening the High Druid of Shannara trilogy roughly two decades after the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara, the story finds Grianne Ohmsford serving as High Druid of the newly re-formed Druid Council at Paranor. A faction of Druids led by Shadea a'Ru uses a forbidden magic known as liquid night to banish Grianne into the Forbidding, the demon-infested realm beyond the Four Lands. Grianne's devoted dwarf attendant Tagwen assembles a rescue party, including her young nephew Pen Ohmsford, who has an unusual gift for communing with nature, the elf-turned-Druid Ahren Elessedil, and his niece Khyber Elessedil, heir to a set of magical Elfstones, along with the Rover girl Cinnaminson.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

- Internal chronology, within Shannara: position 20 of 32: previous Morgawr (2002) · next Tanequil (2004)
