Synopsis
Jhegaala follows Vlad Taltos as he sets out to learn about his mother's family after discovering that her maiden name was Merss, traveling to the small town of Burz in search of relatives he has never met. On arriving, Vlad, accompanied by his familiar Loiosh, finds the Merss family home burned, apparently by witchcraft, and its occupants dead, turning what began as a personal search for his roots into an investigation of their deaths. A local nobleman known as the Count first has Vlad captured but later offers him sanctuary, while a man named Dahni, claiming to work for the Count, proves to have allegiances that run deeper and darker than they first appear. As Vlad digs into the murders, the case draws him into a tangle of assassins, magic users, and local political intrigue, told in a noir-inflected style that echoes classic detective fiction.

Notes
- From the series record (Vlad Taltos): 17 novels (1983-2024) of a planned 19-book structure (17 House-named books + Taltos, named for the protagonist, + a final closing volume, The Last Contract, not yet written; Chreotha, the 18th, is also not yet written). Internal chronology is contested among fan sources and explicitly not recorded here, see the notes on Jhereg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
