Synopsis
Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat continues the series of story collections centered on Kai Lung, the itinerant Chinese storyteller whose travels and encounters provide the framing device for a further set of independent tales told in the author's characteristic ornate, mock-classical style. As in the earlier volumes, the individual stories mix wit, irony, and moral fable, gently parodying the conventions of traditional Chinese storytelling as filtered through an English literary sensibility. Kai Lung's own circumstances as a wandering entertainer, obliged to spin tales to satisfy patrons, audiences, or captors along his travels, continue to loosely connect the otherwise self-contained narratives, extending the voice and structure established across the series' earlier books.
