Overview

Kai Lung is an Edwardian-era pulp fantasy story cycle following an itinerant Chinese storyteller who talks his way out of danger by spinning ornate, digression-filled tales within tales, set in a deliberately fanciful, invented version of China rather than a historical one. Running from 1900 to 1940 across four books -- The Wallet of Kai Lung, Kai Lung's Golden Hours, Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat, and Kai Lung Beneath the Mulberry-Tree -- it is one of the foundational English-language pulp fantasy series of the early twentieth century. Ernest Bramah's ornate, deliberately overwrought prose style, full of elaborate courtesies and proverbs invented to sound authentically Chinese, became influential in its own right and was later cited as a direct inspiration by writers working in similarly mannered, faux-historical registers, most notably Jack Vance's Dying Earth stories, making the cycle an important, if now lesser-read, ancestor of later baroque fantasy prose.
