Synopsis

At the Kazalm academy, where she has begun to study the medicine of beasts, Elin meets Lilan, a young Ōjū that has been wounded and sent there for care. The royal beasts, held to be sacred creatures sent by the gods as the emblem of the crown, never grow tame and must never be tamed, and Elin’s teachers warn her that anyone who comes too close will be torn apart. She refuses to master the animal through fear, and through the sound of a harp she finds a way to reach Lilan’s mind. That discovery draws her into the plots surrounding the throne and a struggle that will decide the kingdom’s fate, and it forces her to ask whether people and beasts can ever truly live side by side.
