Synopsis

Kushiel's Justice is the second novel of the Imriel Trilogy, picking up as Imriel nó Montrève de la Courcel returns to Terre d'Ange from his studies abroad, more composed but still marked by his mother Melisande's infamy. He finds himself drawn into a forbidden mutual attraction with his cousin Sidonie, heir to the throne, a match the entire realm would recoil from given his parentage. Choosing duty over feeling, Imriel travels to Alba to wed Dorelei, a princess of that land, hoping distance and marriage will extinguish his love for Sidonie. The journey carries him into the politics and old magic of Alba, where his decision to set aside his own desire in favor of obligation runs against Terre d'Ange's own guiding precept of following the heart, and where unseen dark forces take an interest in the buried passion between him and Sidonie.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
