Synopsis
War breaks out between Tortall and Scanra, and Kel, newly dubbed a Knight of the Realm at the opening of Lady Knight, is assigned not to the front lines but to manage a refugee camp, a posting that at first feels like a sidelining of her hard-won knighthood. She soon finds real purpose in the work, protecting and organizing the displaced people under her care even as the war presses closer to the camp's borders. Alongside this responsibility, Kel is given a private and unsettling charge by the mystical Chamber of the Ordeal, to find and stop a dark mage who is using necromancy to power devastating war machines built from the souls of stolen children. Balancing her duty to the refugees who depend on her against this dangerous hunt puts Kel under mounting pressure as the war intensifies.
