Synopsis

Magi'i of Cyador, the tenth novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, follows Lorn, a gifted young man born into a family of magi in the isolated, technologically and magically advanced empire of Cyador. Despite his talent, Lorn lacks the unquestioning loyalty to the imperial order that is expected of a practicing Magus, and as a result he is passed over for a magical career and instead pushed into military service as a lancer officer. Posted to a dangerous frontier region to help defend Cyador against recurring barbarian incursions, Lorn must adapt to the harsh realities of soldiering far from the comforts and structure of Cyad, all while the novel lays groundwork for Cyador's eventual place within the wider Recluce mythology, showing the empire generations before it becomes historical backdrop in later books.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
