Synopsis
Maria Owens is left as a baby on a doorstep in rural seventeenth-century England and is raised by Hannah Owens, a healer who teaches her herbs and spells. Hannah warns her that love brings sorrow, but Maria's life changes when a man she loves abandons her. She follows him across the ocean to Salem, Massachusetts, a town where women with knowledge like hers are watched and accused. There she settles in and, hurt and angry, places a curse on the men who love the women of her line. The novel traces the origin of the curse that shapes every later generation of the Owens family.
