Synopsis
Deep in the frozen forests of Vyanthryr, Lord Rana leads a crew of warriors upriver in search of the King-Speaker, an oracle whose knowledge might bring an end to the civil war ravaging their homeland. Along the way the expedition pulls a half-dead stranger from the river, a man who identifies himself only as Manesh, the Bastard of Marmach. His arrival raises immediate questions among Rana's company about who he really is, what he was doing alone in the wilderness, and whether he represents a danger to the mission or an unlikely asset to it. As the expedition continues upriver toward the oracle, Manesh's uncertain, possibly supernatural past becomes increasingly entangled with the fate of Rana's crew and the outcome of the journey they are on.
