Synopsis
Set in fifteenth-century Venice, a haven for masterless vampires, this prequel follows Mircea Basarab, a former prince who has become a penniless vampire. To survive in the city he takes work for a secretive courtesan and a beautiful senator, and he hunts an ancient assassin while a vendetta older than Venice comes to a head. The book gives the history of the master vampire who shapes Cassie Palmer's life in the main series, and it is told from his point of view.
