Synopsis
Aralorn is a shapeshifter and a mercenary of Sianim, the nation of soldiers for hire, who makes her living as a spy. Sent to the court of the kingdom of Reth, she finds the land under the spell of the ae'Magi, Geoffrey, the master of illusion whom everyone loves and trusts: his glamour has enchanted the countryside and its people, and only Aralorn, whose magic is of the old green kind rather than the ae'Magi's human sorcery, can see through it. Her unlikely ally is Wolf, a sardonic companion who is far more than the animal he appears to be and who carries a secret bound up with the magician himself. Together they must rally the few rebels who can resist the ae'Magi's spell and bring down a man the whole kingdom would die to protect. Briggs's first novel, revised for its 2010 reissue.

Notes
- From the series record (Sianim): Patricia Briggs's earliest fantasy world, centred on the mercenary nation of Sianim: Masques and its long-delayed direct sequel Wolfsbane follow the shapeshifting spy Aralorn and her companion Wolf; Steal the Dragon and When Demons Walk are self-contained stories in the same world. Ordered by internal chronology, as the author's bibliographies list them.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Sianim: position 1 of 4: next Steal the Dragon (1995)
- Internal chronology, within Sianim: position 1 of 4: next Wolfsbane (2010)
