Synopsis

When Rialla was young, slave traders from Darran ambushed her clan on the plains, killed the men and enslaved the women and children, and for years she lived in bondage in Darran until a chance to escape came and she took it, fleeing to the mercenary nation of Sianim. Now the spymaster of Sianim offers her a way to strike back at her former masters. A lord of Darran is seeking to outlaw slavery in his country, and there are plots to kill him before the law can pass; Rialla, who knows Darran and its slave markets from the inside, is chosen to prevent the murder. Posing once more as a slave, she returns to the land she escaped and is plunged into deadly magic, where gods walk in human form, her most trusted companions are not what they claim, and she could all too easily be enslaved again.

Where it sits

  • Universe: Sianim
  • Series: Sianim core; position 3 of 4 in the series' recorded order
  • Author: Patricia Briggs

Notes

  • From the series record (Sianim): Patricia Briggs's earliest fantasy world, centred on the mercenary nation of Sianim: Masques and its long-delayed direct sequel Wolfsbane follow the shapeshifting spy Aralorn and her companion Wolf; Steal the Dragon and When Demons Walk are self-contained stories in the same world. Ordered by internal chronology, as the author's bibliographies list them.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
