Synopsis

Sham has spent most of her young life as a sorceress and a thief in the city of Southwood, stealing from the nobility of the conquerors who occupy it. Now a killer is loose in the city, claiming the lives of nobles one after another, and Lord Kerim, the Reeve who governs Southwood for the conquering Cybellians, needs help that his own soldiers cannot give. He turns to Sham. Posing as his mistress, the thief moves behind the castle's walls to hunt the murderer among the court, only to learn that she is tracking no mortal: the killer is a demon, and the ordinary weapons of the Reeve's men are useless against it. Sham must draw on everything she knows of magic to send it back where it came from, because Southwood has nowhere to hide and no time to run. A standalone in the same world as Masques.

Notes

  • From the series record (Sianim): Patricia Briggs's earliest fantasy world, centred on the mercenary nation of Sianim: Masques and its long-delayed direct sequel Wolfsbane follow the shapeshifting spy Aralorn and her companion Wolf; Steal the Dragon and When Demons Walk are self-contained stories in the same world. Ordered by internal chronology, as the author's bibliographies list them.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Sianim: position 3 of 4: previous Steal the Dragon (1995) · next Wolfsbane (2010)
