Synopsis

Written as a direct sequel to Masques but not published until 2010, Wolfsbane brings the shapeshifting mercenary Aralorn home. Word reaches her that her noble father, the Lyon of Lambshold, has died, and she and her companion Wolf return to the family estate she left to make her own way in the world. There they find that the Lyon is not dead at all, but ensorcelled: a mysterious mist holds him between life and death, and the ae'Magi's successor is using him as a conduit through which to reach and destroy Aralorn and Wolf. Among the half-family who never quite accepted her, Aralorn must unravel the spell before it kills her father, which means delving deeper into the two kinds of magic in her blood and into Wolf's own tangled inheritance from the man they destroyed.

Notes

  • From the series record (Sianim): Patricia Briggs's earliest fantasy world, centred on the mercenary nation of Sianim: Masques and its long-delayed direct sequel Wolfsbane follow the shapeshifting spy Aralorn and her companion Wolf; Steal the Dragon and When Demons Walk are self-contained stories in the same world. Ordered by internal chronology, as the author's bibliographies list them.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Sianim: position 4 of 4: previous When Demons Walk (1998)
  • Internal chronology, within Sianim: position 2 of 4: previous Masques (1993) · next Steal the Dragon (1995)
