Synopsis

In 1400, Christopher delAurvre, Baron of Aurverelle, comes home to Adria from the Crusade of Nicopolis, damaged in body and mind and disillusioned with religion and nobility. A papal envoy beats a young woman named Vanessa, and Christopher kills him and takes her in. As she heals, Vanessa begins to understand that her part-elven blood lets her perceive the patterns of reality. Meanwhile mercenary bands, urged on by Christopher's cousin Yvonette, sack the town of Ypris and then turn on the surrounding countryside, and Christopher must organize a resistance. The story takes place about two generations after the first book, during the Western Schism.
