Synopsis

Oath of Fealty opens the Paladin's Legacy series, set some years after the original Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy, with Paks the paladin now a minor presence in a wider political story. The book follows two rulers reaching turning points at once: the mercenary captain Kieri Phelan, revealed as the missing heir to the throne of Lyonya, must prepare to take up a crown he never expected, while young Prince Mikeli of Tsaia has just inherited his own throne and faces a coup attempt by the Verrakaien, a noble family steeped in forbidden, blood-based magery. Mikeli's survival, and that of Tsaia itself, comes to depend on the one Verrakai whose magic is not tainted by murder. Behind both crises lies the suggestion of a wider, older conspiracy gathering against the two new kings, one neither of them yet fully understands.

Notes

  • From the series record (Paladin's Legacy): 5-novel direct-sequel sequence (2010-2014), continuing immediately after The Deed of Paksenarrion. Not to be confused with The Legacy of Gird, a differently-named earlier prequel duology.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Paladin's Legacy: position 1 of 5: next Kings of the North (2011)
  • Internal chronology, within The Paksenarrion Universe: position 6 of 10: previous Oath of Gold (1989) · next Kings of the North (2011)
