Synopsis

Ordermaster, the thirteenth novel in L. E. Modesitt Jr.'s Saga of Recluce, continues the story of Kharl, the former cooper introduced in Wellspring of Chaos, who has since risen to the position of Lord's Mage in his adopted homeland of Austra. Early in the novel Kharl helps suppress a rebellion among Austra's nobility, using both his political standing and his order-magic abilities to restore stability to his new home. He is then sent as an envoy back to Nordla, the land of his birth, tasked with identifying and countering the next likely target of the expansionist empire of Hamor, a mission that leaves Kharl trying to balance loyalty to Austra, his adopted nation, with his lingering ties to Nordla, the homeland he once fled.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
