Synopsis

Natural Ordermage opens the fourteenth volume of the Saga of Recluce on the island of Recluce, where order magic is tightly regulated by a Council of magisters. Rahl, a young apprentice scrivener, has grown restless in his trade and begins experimenting with order-magic techniques that fall outside the methods normally taught to ordermages, applying his skills in ways that suit his own advantage rather than strict doctrine. His unconventional practices and defiant attitude draw the unwelcome scrutiny of the Council, which tests him and ultimately exiles him to the distant continent of Hamor rather than allow him to remain on Recluce. Sent to work within an ordermage-run trading house in this unfamiliar land, Rahl must adapt to a foreign culture while his magical abilities, and the dangers that accompany them, continue to intensify.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Saga of Recluce): One continuous, internally chronological world across many reading-order sub-arcs; the whole published run to date is Core Canon, per the author's own single ordered list. Ongoing; a further volume (Last of the First) is announced for 2026 and is not yet published, so it is not registered (Constitution Article 2).

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
