Synopsis

Two linked parts share one book. In the North, the Sixth Company of the Mountain Guard holds the northern border of the Meekhan Empire, defending local people against raiders, cults and older, stranger dangers, while a larger pattern slowly shows behind the separate episodes. In the South, a merchant hires a bodyguard from the Issar, a desert people whose warriors wear masks and keep their faces hidden, and the choice sets off events that reach far beyond one caravan. The setting includes tribes with a history of about three and a half thousand years, wars between gods and humans, and the Aspect, a power able to bend elements and people.
