Synopsis
Powers follows Gavir, a young slave with precognitive abilities who serves as a tutor to the children of the household that owns him in the city of Etra, a life he has known since childhood and has largely made peace with despite its constraints. When a devastating loss shatters the fragile stability of his position within the household, Gavir is forced to flee into the wider world as a hunted wanderer with no clear place to belong, relying on his wits and his gift to survive outside the only structured life he has ever known. His journey eventually brings him into contact with the wider world explored in the earlier novels Gifts and Voices, including some of their own characters, as Gavir searches for a place, and a purpose, he can finally call his own.
