Overview
Ursula K. Le Guin's young-adult fantasy trilogy set in the Western Shore, a region of loosely connected communities with wildly different relationships to magic and power, distinct from Le Guin's Earthsea. Gifts (2004) follows a boy from an isolated highland clan whose hereditary gift, an involuntary power to blight or kill, sets him apart even among his own magically gifted neighbors; Voices (2006) moves to an occupied city where books and reading have been outlawed by conquerors; and Powers (2007) follows an enslaved boy whose own magical gift for perfect memory becomes central to his path toward freedom. Each novel stands largely on its own, connected loosely through setting and recurring minor characters rather than a single continuing plot, and the trilogy won the PEN Center USA Literary Award and the Nebula Award among other honors across its three volumes.
