Synopsis
In an occupied country under the harsh rule of Alds invaders who forbid reading and regard books as evil, a girl named Memer has grown up secretly surrounded by suppressed literature hidden within her household, the Oracle House, where she serves as an assistant to its keeper. Her quiet, secretive existence changes when a pair of traveling storytellers arrive in the occupied city, and Memer gradually realizes they are Gry and Orrec, the protagonists whose own journey began in the earlier novel Gifts. Their arrival, and the political tensions simmering beneath the city's occupation, draw Memer into a role far more public and dangerous than the hidden library work she has known her whole life.
