Overview
Eon is Alison Goodman's complete two-book Asian-inspired secondary-world fantasy duology, following Eona, a girl who has disguised herself as a boy for years to train as a Dragoneye apprentice, one of twelve who bond with a zodiac dragon and wield its magic in service of the empire. Published in Australia and the UK in 2008 as The Two Pearls of Wisdom, and retitled Eon: Dragoneye Reborn for the US market, the story concluded in 2011 with Eona, also published in some markets as Eona: The Last Dragoneye, following Eona's struggle to master a rare and dangerous dragon bond while hiding her true identity within a rigidly gendered court. The duology draws on Chinese zodiac mythology and East Asian court settings for its worldbuilding, and Goodman has cited the pressure of maintaining Eona's disguise as central to the story's tension between personal identity and imperial duty.
