Synopsis

Promise of the Witch-King, the first book of the Sellswords Trilogy, follows the mercenary partnership of the assassin Artemis Entreri and the drow Jarlaxle as they are hired by two dragon sisters, Ilnezhara and Tazmikella, to track down magical artifacts left behind by the long-dead lich Zhengyi, the Witch-King who once ruled the lands of Damara and Vaasa. Their investigation takes a dangerous turn when Arrayan Faylin, a half-orc woman studying an ancient tome, falls under the lingering influence of Zhengyi's dark magic and inadvertently begins reconstituting Castle Perilous, the Witch-King's former stronghold. Together with a band of adventurers including Commander Ellery, Mariabronne the Rover, Athrogate, Canthan, Calihye, and Olgerkhan, Entreri and Jarlaxle must investigate the reforming fortress and the gargoyles and other supernatural threats spilling out of it, which endanger the nearby town of Palishchuk.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
