Synopsis
Around 1900, American entertainment is changing: minstrel shows give way to vaudeville, and vaudeville to moving pictures, with crowds of different backgrounds gathering in dark theaters to watch. Redwood, an African American woman, and Aidan, a Seminole Irish man, are gifted performers and hoodoo conjurers. They travel from Georgia to Chicago, trying to bring the world they imagine to life on stage, on screen and in everyday life. For them, hoodoo is a power that heals and holds a community together. The system around them is stacked against it, so their talent brings both joy and pain. The book is presented as a novel of what might have been.
