Synopsis
The gamers who were drawn into the world of Greyhawk have won their first quest, yet they still cannot go home. Their memories of Earth return, and they learn they are players who were pulled into the game they loved. A stranger named Berthold, a thief who claims to be from Earth as well, tells them how they might escape and leads them back to Quag Keep to free an imprisoned wizard they overlooked the first time. One of the seven is gravely ill and desperate to return. While they search, an evil force is draining magic from their home world, and some of their old enemies in Greyhawk are ready to kill them.

- Internal chronology, within Greyhawk: position 8 of 19: previous White Plume Mountain (1999) · next Sea of Death (1987)
