Synopsis
Ruin and Rising opens with the Darkling in control of Ravka and Alina Starkov, badly weakened and separated from most of her allies, forced into hiding in ancient caverns beneath the White Cathedral. There she is kept under the watchful eye of the Apparat and his zealous followers, who revere her as a living saint even as she chafes against being confined underground and cut off from the war above. With the nation's fate resting on what remains of her power and a scattered handful of loyal companions, Alina resolves to search for the last of Morozova's amplifiers, a legendary firebird she believes may be strong enough to finally defeat the Darkling.
