Synopsis

Scar Night, published by Alan Campbell in 2006, opens the Deepgate Codex in the gothic city of Deepgate, a settlement of chains and iron suspended directly over a bottomless abyss believed to lead to Hell itself. Rachel Hael is an assassin serving the city's ruling Church, tasked with investigating a series of disappearances tied to Scar Night, a single night each month when the city's inhabitants are ordered to stay indoors for fear of a predatory, winged killer said to stalk the streets. Her investigation draws her toward Dill, a young, inexperienced angel newly come into his role as the Church's reluctant champion, and toward secrets buried deep in Deepgate's founding history that its rulers have worked hard to keep hidden from the troubled, decaying city below.
