Synopsis

Death flows from the fortress of the Old Man of the Mountain, hidden in the canyons of Sentinelspire, a vast and dormant volcano. A ranger and his apprentice are captured by a group of assassins who demand their help in overthrowing their leader, the Old Man who rules the fortress. Though the ranger does not want to help, he discovers that the Old Man's plans may involve the master druid who gave him a new life, and the destruction of all he now holds dear: to save the future, he must embrace his past. The fourth book of The Citadels, by Mark Sehestedt. Each book of The Citadels centres on one of the castles, keeps, fortresses or watchtowers of the Forgotten Realms and is a self-contained adventure.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
