Synopsis

Servant of the Shard, the third book of the Paths of Darkness series, centers on Artemis Entreri as he regains his composure and forms an uneasy partnership with the drow mercenary Jarlaxle, whose band, Bregan D'aerthe, serves as their connection to the surface world. The two return to Calimport, the city where Entreri first built his fearsome reputation, so that he can reestablish his standing after his time in drow captivity. Entreri must navigate the shifting loyalties and dangers of Calimport's guilds while also contending with ambitious lieutenants within Jarlaxle's own organization, among them Berg'inyon Baenre, Rai'gy Bondalek, and Kimmuriel Oblodra. The greater threat, though, comes from within: Jarlaxle has begun succumbing to the corrupting influence of the sentient crystal shard Crenshinibon, which stokes his ambitions and strains the uneasy alliance between the assassin and the drow.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
