Synopsis
Shades of Milk and Honey, published by Mary Robinette Kowal in 2010, opens the Glamourist Histories in a Regency-era England where genteel women are expected to master glamour, an illusory art of magic, alongside more conventional accomplishments like music and needlework. Jane Ellsworth is plain by the standards of her family and neighborhood but exceptionally skilled in glamour, overshadowed socially by her prettier, more conventionally charming younger sister Melody, whose prospects her father hopes to secure through a good marriage. As Jane quietly harbors feelings for a neighbor who values her artistry over appearance, the arrival of a celebrated professional glamourist in the neighborhood, hired to work alongside her, complicates both her romantic hopes and her understanding of her own talent, drawing her toward choices she had not expected to face.
