Mary Robinette Harrison, known professionally as Mary Robinette Kowal, was born February 8, 1969, in Raleigh, North Carolina, and earned a degree in art education with a minor in theater and speech from East Carolina University. Before her writing career, Kowal spent decades as a professional puppeteer, beginning in 1989 with work for the Center for Puppetry Arts and Jim Henson Productions; she performed for two seasons on the Icelandic children's television show LazyTown and participated in a Sesame Workshop puppetry program, later founding her own production company, Other Hand Productions. Kowal is best known for two major series: the Glamourist Histories, five novels published between 2010 and 2015 set in a magical version of the Regency era in the tradition of Jane Austen, and the Lady Astronaut Universe, an alternate-history science fiction series beginning with The Calculating Stars, imagining an accelerated space program launched after a catastrophic meteorite strike. A four-time Hugo Award winner, Kowal's honors include the 2008 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, the 2011 Hugo for "For Want of a Nail," the 2014 Hugo for Best Novelette, and both the 2018 Nebula Award and 2019 Hugo Award for The Calculating Stars. She served as president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America from 2019 to 2021, and since 2011 has been a full-time cast member of the influential writing advice podcast Writing Excuses.
