Synopsis

Having already claimed three parts of the Will, Arthur finds himself trapped in the House when a double left behind on Earth prevents his return, forcing him to remain among the Denizens far longer than he intends. He is drafted into the House's military and sent into the Great Maze, a vast, chessboard-like realm governed by strict martial order, where he must earn his way toward Sir Thursday, the Trustee who commands the House's armies and holds the fourth fragment of the Will. As Arthur adapts to military discipline utterly unlike anything in his ordinary life, he must find a way to reach Sir Thursday and reclaim the Key without losing himself, or his connection to Earth, in the process.

Awards (verified)

  • Locus Award (Young Adult Book), 2007: finalist; 5th place, no-cutoff convention.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Keys to the Kingdom): Core Canon = all 7 novels of the completed series (Scholastic US / HarperCollins UK / Allen & Unwin Australia, 2003-2010). Confirmed a separate, unrelated universe from Nix's The Old Kingdom, already in this canon -- different world, different magic system, no shared characters; both records are cross-referenced as being by the same author.

Neighbouring works

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings, but they resolve to the exact same sequence for this book, so one combined line is shown instead of two identical ones.
