Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Bertie Shakespeare-Smith, who has the gift of word magic, wants a family that is finally whole. Her father, the Scrimshander, is missing, and her mother, Ophelia, a water maiden, is growing weaker. When the Queen of the Distant Castle invites Bertie and her troupe to perform, Bertie sees a chance to win a magical wish that could bring her parents together again. The road is dangerous: Sedna, the sea goddess, still threatens the travellers, and bandits attack the caravan to steal a powerful book. Along the way Bertie must also face her feelings for Nate, the pirate, and Ariel, the air spirit, and weigh her duty to her family against her longing for freedom.
