Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Bertie has grown up in the enchanted Théâtre Illuminata, where the characters of every play live behind the curtain. She has discovered that she can write new scenes into the theatre's Compleat Works and make them happen, a power that unsettles the Theatre Manager, who prizes order above all. When Nate, the pirate who loves her, is taken by Sedna, a vengeful sea goddess, Bertie leaves the only home she has known to bring him back. She travels with Ariel, the air spirit who has sworn to protect her, and four fairies from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Out in the wider world, the journey tests her magic and her loyalties, and Bertie finds herself torn between the two young men who each want to stand at her side.
