Synopsis
Jonathan Thomas Meriweather, known as Jon-Tom, is a law student and part-time rock guitarist in Los Angeles who is pulled out of his own world by a spell gone wrong. The hardheaded tortoise wizard Clothahump was trying to summon an engineer to help him against a coming threat, and got Jon-Tom instead. He wakes in a land of intelligent talking animals, where he finds that when he plays and sings on a strange local instrument, the duar, his songs take on magical power, though what they do depends on the words and rarely goes as planned. Teamed with Mudge, a hard-drinking, womanizing otter, Jon-Tom must learn to be a spellsinger as the insect armies of the Plated Folk prepare to invade.
