Overview

Alan Dean Foster’s eight comic fantasy novels (1983 to 1994) follow Jon-Tom, a law student and would-be rock musician from Los Angeles who is summoned into a world of talking animals by a bumbling turtle wizard, Clothahump. There he discovers that his songs, played on a magical instrument called a duar, become spells, with unpredictable results that depend on the lyrics. With the roguish otter Mudge at his side he becomes the Spellsinger; the last two books follow his son.
