Alan Dean Foster is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy, born in New York City on 18 November 1946. He is best known for his Humanx Commonwealth novels, the far-future setting of the Flinx and Pip books and the Icerigger trilogy, and for the comic fantasy Spellsinger series (1983 to 1994), in which a young musician’s songs become magic in a world of talking animals. He is also one of the most prolific authors of film novelizations: he ghostwrote the novelization of the first Star Wars film, credited to George Lucas, and its follow-up Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, and he wrote the novelizations of Alien and its sequels, Star Trek episodes adapted from the animated series, and many other films. In 2008 the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers named him a Grand Master.
