Synopsis
Spirit Gate, published by Kate Elliott in 2006, opens the Crossroads trilogy in the land of the Hundred, once overseen by divine Guardians who withdrew from the world generations ago, leaving eagle-riding reeves to keep the peace in their name. As the reeves' authority weakens and a dark, spreading menace threatens the region's fragile order, reeve Joss searches for answers surrounding his lover's unsolved murder, uncovering signs that something old and dangerous is stirring. At the same time, newlyweds Mai and Captain Anji flee into the Hundred after political turmoil in their homeland makes it unsafe for them to stay, hoping to find refuge among strangers. Their arrival, and the brigandage and corruption already unsettling the Hundred, draw both storylines toward a conflict rooted in choices made years before the novel begins.
