Synopsis
Shadow Gate, published by Kate Elliott in 2008, is the second novel of the Crossroads trilogy. Having successfully defended the city of Olossi in the previous book, Mai and Anji settle into the difficult work of building a stable community amid the Hundred's ongoing unrest. Meanwhile, the narrative turns to the mysterious Guardians themselves: Marit, a reeve who died before the events of the first book, unexpectedly returns to consciousness as one of these near-divine beings, only to discover that something has gone wrong with the passage into the afterlife she expected. As she encounters other transformed Guardians and begins to piece together what has become of their ancient order, Anji's forces continue working to understand the true nature and intentions of these powerful figures, whose reawakening threatens to upend the fragile peace the Hundred has only just begun to find.
