Synopsis
The County's long-serving spook has retired, and the only person left to take on the work is Thomas Ward, who is still hardly more than a boy. Tom must also train an apprentice of his own, Jenny, a young woman who has not yet been tested in the work. Before long, girls begin to die in mysterious circumstances, and the two of them follow the trail towards a deadly beast. Monstrous assassins are loose in the County, and word reaches them that a new darkness is rising in the north, one that threatens far more than a single county. Tom has to learn how to teach while he is still learning how to lead.
