Synopsis

In the second book of the Circle Opens series, Briar Moss travels to the city of Chammur and meets Evvy, a street girl with an untrained gift for stone magic living among the city's poor. As Briar takes on the role of mentoring Evvy, he must balance his newly respectable life as a dedicate's student with the instincts and connections from his own past as a street child. Their growing bond is complicated by the danger posed by Chammur's street gangs and by Lady Zenadia, a powerful and dangerous local figure whose interests are threatened by what Briar and Evvy uncover. The book follows Briar navigating both worlds at once as he tries to protect his new student from the gang conflicts closing in around them.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series The Circle Opens: position 2 of 4: previous Magic Steps (2000) · next Cold Fire (2002)
  • Internal chronology, within Circle of Magic (Emelan): position 6 of 11: previous Magic Steps (2000) · next Cold Fire (2002)
