Synopsis

Sub-Majer's Challenge, the twenty-sixth volume of the Saga of Recluce, follows Alyiakal after his promotion to Sub-Majer, a junior command rank, as he takes charge of the Mirror Lancer post at Lhaarat along Cyador's northern border, having already repelled a series of raids there. His command is tested further when the Duke of Cerlyn begins building a larger army as a prelude to seizing Cyadoran territory that falls under Alyiakal's protection. As the most junior post commander along the entire northern frontier, Alyiakal must defend his section of the border with limited troops and little prospect of reinforcement from higher command, forcing him to rely on tactical ingenuity and the loyalty of his undermanned garrison rather than superior numbers.
